Our Experience by Pastor Johnny Bell

My wife, my children and I know firsthand the misery heartache and pain brought on by a lifestyle of drug addiction. Even though we came from totally different sides of the fence, we both ended up in the same place called “the dumps”.

My wife was brought up in Foster Care, went to school and even college. By her own admittance she was an educated fool. Her first encounter with crack cocaine was to lose weight, which quickly turned to addiction. She sometimes worked two and three jobs just to support her habit.

My story’s a little different. As a little child I was molested by different individuals in my family, after being fed alcohol. I fought and struggled with those events in my life. I questioned my sexuality. Was I supposed to be with boys or girls? Men or women? All the time I was trying to drown out the pain with alcohol, sex, drugs, etc. I ended up quitting school, losing jobs, homes, respect and everything else that comes with living that lifestyle.

And even though our children were not drug addicts, they were forced to live a drug addict’s lifestyle.

More than 20 years later we can thank God for Restoration Ministry’s Men’s and Women’s Homes from which both of us are “graduates”. We are truly witnesses of the restoring power of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Weekly Focus Scripture

FOCUS SCRIPTURE FOR THE WEEK   Luke 11:13

(Amplified Bible - AMP)

13 If you, then, being evil [that is, sinful by nature], know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask and continue to ask Him!

(International Standard Version - ISV)

13 So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who keep asking him!”

(King James Version - KJV)

13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

(The Message - MSG)

12-13 If your little boy asks for a serving of fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? If your little girl asks for an egg, do you trick her with a spider? As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing—you’re at least decent to your own children. And don’t you think the Father who conceived you in love will give the Holy Spirit when you ask him?”

Food for Thought

What a blessing to know that our Heavenly Father delights in giving good gifts!Luke 11:13 encourages us to keep asking, keep believing, and keep expecting God to pour out His Holy Spirit in our lives. We can come to Him with confidence, knowing He is loving, generous, and faithful to fill His children with His presence, power, peace, and guidance for every step of the journey.

The Set - Intercessory Prayer

Come Pray With Us

Welcome to The Set!

This is a Harp and Bowl Worship Service.  Harp and Bowl worship is a practice where Harps (songs of Praise & Worship) and Bowls (prayers) are combined to create a dynamic structure for intercessory prayer  (inspired by Revelation 5:8).

Harp and Bowl emphasizes unified prayer, congregational singing, and a flow between intercession, worship, and personal prayer.  Join us in person or send your prayer request by using our chat icon or email us at info@stlrestorationchurch.org and we'll pray for you.

We center our prayer service around a monthly focus scripture which you can find below.

June Scripture Focus

1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 (King James Version - NKJV)

9 For what thanks can we render to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sake before our God, 10 night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face and perfect what is lacking in your faith? 11 Now may our God and Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you. 12 And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you, 13 so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints.

1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 (New Living Translation - NLT)

9 How we thank God for you! Because of you we have great joy as we enter God’s presence. 10 Night and day we pray earnestly for you, asking God to let us see you again to fill the gaps in your faith. 11 May God our Father and our Lord Jesus bring us to you very soon. 12 And may the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow, just as our love for you overflows. 13 May he, as a result, make your hearts strong, blameless, and holy as you stand before God our Father when our Lord Jesus comes again with all his holy people. Amen.

1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 (The Voice - VOICE)

9 What thanks would ever be enough to offer God about you for all the jubilant celebration we’ll feel before our God because of you? 10 We remain vigilant in our prayers, night and day praying to once again see your faces and to help complete whatever may be lacking in your faith.

Note: It is obvious Paul loves Jesus, and His Spirit reinforces Paul in every way. How else is he able to walk away from beating after beating or endure trials of the heart and mind? He must constantly be praying for those he can and can’t reach, for those he is with and for those he has to leave behind. Paul loves Jesus, and so he cannot help but embrace the world as passionately as he does.

11 May God Himself, our Father, along with our Lord Jesus, [the Anointed One,] navigate our way to you. 12 May the Lord flood you with an unending, undying love for one another and for all humanity, like our love for you, 13 so that your hearts will be reinforced with His strength, held blameless and holy before God, our Father, when our Lord Jesus, [the Anointed, the Liberating King,] appears along with all His holy ones. [Amen.]

1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 (International Standard Version - ISV)

9 How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we have in God’s presence because of you? 10 We pray very hard night and day that we may see you again face to face, so that we may equip you with whatever is lacking in your faith. 11 Now may our God and Father and our Lord Jesus provide a way for us to visit you. 12 May the Lord greatly increase your love for each other and for all people, just as we love you. 13 Then your hearts will be strong, blameless, and holy in the presence of God, who is our Father, when our Lord Jesus appears with all his saints.

Summary of this Scripture:

In 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13, Paul expresses intense joy and gratitude to God for the Thessalonians' steadfast faith despite persecution. He prays earnestly to visit them again to strengthen their faith and asks that God increase their love for each other and for all people, while strengthening them in holiness for Christ’s return.

  • Thanksgiving and Joy (vv. 9-10): Paul is overwhelmed with gratitude to God for the good report of the Thessalonian church's faith, calling it a source of great joy.

  • Desire for Fellowship (v. 10): He prays "night and day" to see them in person to further mentor them and address any gaps in their faith.

  • Prayer for Growth in Love (vv. 11-12): Paul prays that God would remove obstacles to their reunion and that the believers would "increase and overflow" in love for one another and for everyone.

  • Preparation for Christ's Return (v. 13): The ultimate goal of this prayer is that their hearts be strengthened and kept blameless/holy before God when Jesus returns with his saints.

This passage is a powerful example of pastoral care, where Paul connects his hope for the church to God's work in establishing them in love and holiness.

Key Prayer Points of This Scripture

These key points follow Paul’s prayer in 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13—thanking God for His work in the church, asking Him to strengthen what is lacking in our faith, to direct relationships and ministry connections, to make love increase and overflow, and to establish our hearts blameless in holiness as we look for Christ’s return.

  • Father, we thank You with joy—help us to recognize and celebrate what You’re doing in our church, families, and lives, and to keep gratitude at the center of our prayers (vv. 9-10).

  • Strengthen what is lacking in our faith—meet us in the gaps with Your Word, wisdom, and steady endurance, and mature us in trust and obedience (v. 10).

  • Lord, direct our way to one another—remove obstacles, open doors for fellowship, discipleship, and apostolic ministry, and connect the right people at the right time for encouragement and growth (v. 11).

  • Make our love abound—and establish us in holiness—grow our love for one another and for all people, and strengthen our hearts to be blameless in holiness as we prepare for the coming of Jesus (vv. 12-13).

Call to Action

This month, let this passage move you from prayer to practice—choose one action each week that strengthens faith, deepens love, and prepares your heart for Jesus’ return:

  • Practice thanksgiving out loud—each day, thank God for one specific person and tell them what you appreciate about them (vv. 9-10).

  • Fill the gaps in your faith—identify one area where you feel “lacking,” then commit to a simple step (a daily Scripture reading plan, a discipleship conversation, or asking for prayer) (v. 10).

  • Pursue fellowship on purpose—pray, “Lord, direct my way,” then reach out to reconnect, reconcile, or encourage someone this week (v. 11).

  • Let love overflow—and live set apart—choose one intentional act of love for “one another” and one act of love for “all,” and ask God to establish your heart in holiness as you watch for Christ’s coming (vv. 12-13).
